Mentoring & Supporting Other Organizations

Sahan Youth Project

The Sahan Youth Project addresses the lack of direction available to immigrant youth who have dropped out of school, and who are unemployed. The Sahan Youth Project is about a community helping itself. COSTI has supported this initiative by helping Somali Canadian Mothers for Youth develop governance systems, and build their capacity as an organization so that, in the future, they can provide services independently and respond to other needs in their community.

African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC)

The establishment of the African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC) is essentially about building capacity within the African Canadian community as the Council's mandate is to assist member agencies in developing their own capacity.

Key objectives include:

  • Strengthening the role of agencies serving the African community
  • Identifying the service delivery strengths of member agencies and developing models and protocols for collaboration and partnerships amongst them
  • Educating and raising awareness of African communities and the agencies that serve them
  • Informing funders of the African communities' diversity and actual needs

Through COSTI's ongoing support, the ACSDC has:

  • Established governance and other operational policies
  • Incorporated the Council
  • Held its first Annual General Meeting, and elected its first Board of Directors
  • Developed a strategic plan
  • Secured and maintained funding
